THE TRAGEDY OF A BRILLIANT YOUNG MAN
UBOCHI-TA KAECHI-MMA
Meaning: Today is better than tomorrow.
There was once a remarkably intelligent young man named UBOCHI-TA KAECHI-MMA in an African community. His teachers admired him. His parents believed he would become the pride of the family. Elders often pointed to him as an example for younger children.
His future appeared as bright as the morning sun.
He possessed a quick mind, remarkable memory, uncommon creativity, and unusual leadership qualities. Scholarships seemed within reach. Doors of opportunity were opening before him. Wherever he went, people spoke confidently about the greatness that awaited him.
But destiny is not preserved by talent alone.
As the years passed, he gradually abandoned the company of disciplined friends and surrounded himself with young men who laughed at responsibility and mocked excellence. They lived only for excitement. Every evening became another search for amusement. Every weekend became another opportunity to pursue women from one place to another.
At first it appeared harmless.
He assured himself that he was merely enjoying life.
His books slowly gathered dust.
His dreams quietly lost their color.
His mornings became heavy because his nights were wasted.
His conversations changed from ideas to gossip.
His ambitions gave way to addictions.
His mind, once occupied with purpose, became occupied with pleasure.
The young man who once discussed visions for the future now competed with his companions over meaningless conquests.
Years passed unnoticed.
His classmates completed their education.
Some became doctors.
Some became engineers.
Some became professors.
Some entered ministry.
Others became entrepreneurs and employers of labor.
Meanwhile, he remained where distraction had left him.
The women he pursued built families with responsible men.
The companions who encouraged his reckless lifestyle quietly abandoned him.
The applause of pleasure faded, but the consequences remained.
One afternoon, an old teacher who had once believed in him met him by chance.
Looking into his weary eyes, the teacher sighed and said,
“You did not lose your future because you lacked ability. You lost it because you surrendered your attention.”
The young man lowered his head.
For the first time in many years, he understood that he had not been defeated by poverty, enemies, or lack of opportunity.
He had simply been distracted.
The saddest cemetery in the world is not the one filled with bodies but the one filled with abandoned dreams.
THE LESSON

Pleasure asks, “What do I enjoy now?”

Choose purpose over pleasure.

Choose God’s voice over the endless noise of the world.
