Silence is wisdom when it prevents unnecessary conflict, but it becomes dangerous when it allows destruction to continue. Sometimes, what we refuse to confront gradually gains control over our lives.
The fiercest battles are not always fought in the open. Some take place in the mind, where fear whispers, doubt weakens conviction, and discouragement challenges faith. Sometimes, the enemy does not need to destroy a person; it is enough to persuade that person to stop resisting.
James 4:7 declares, “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
THE STORY OF BILIKISU AND ANYIKA-NKPO, THE NATIVE DOCTOR
Bilikisu was a beautiful young woman who attracted the affection of Anyika-nkpo, a young man who practised traditional medicine. Anyika-nkpo desired to marry her, but Bilikisu could not accept his proposal because their beliefs and visions for the future were different.
Unable to accept her decision, Anyika-nkpo became bitter. In his anger, he threatened her, declaring that if she refused to marry him, she would never find happiness with another man. He pronounced frightening words over her future, intending to fill her heart with fear.
Bilikisu was terrified. Instead of confidently walking away and seeking support, she stood silently, listening to his threats. Her silence was born out of fear, and gradually, she began to wonder whether his words could determine her destiny.
Years passed, but Bilikisu remained unmarried. Whenever a promising relationship emerged, it ended for reasons she could not always understand. As time went on, she began to associate her prolonged singleness with the frightening words Anyika-nkpo had spoken over her.
Her confidence weakened, her hope diminished, and her heart became burdened with questions. Had the words of that young man become a permanent sentence upon her life? Was her future already determined by an encounter she had been too frightened to challenge?
For many years, Bilikisu lived with these fears until she encountered Christ. Through the teaching of God’s Word, prayer, Christian fellowship, and spiritual growth, she began to understand the importance of spiritual discernment and the authority of God over her life.
She discovered that she did not have to live in bondage to another person’s threats. She began to confront her fears, renew her mind with Scripture, and trust God for her future. She also learned to distinguish between spiritual concerns and ordinary life circumstances rather than interpreting every disappointment as evidence of a curse.
One scripture that strengthened her faith was Isaiah 54:17, which declares, “No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper.”
Bilikisu gradually regained her confidence. She stopped allowing the memory of Anyika-nkpo’s threats to dictate her expectations. She learned that her future was not in the hands of a man who had threatened her, but in the hands of God, whom she had come to know.
Her encounter with Christ became a turning point. She began to understand that spiritual maturity involves prayer, faith, wisdom, discernment, and freedom from the fear of human intimidation.
The lesson is profound. Bilikisu’s years of singleness did not, by themselves, prove that Anyika-nkpo’s threats had supernatural power over her. However, the fear created by that encounter had become a heavy burden in her life. Through Christ, she found renewed hope and the courage to face her future without being governed by fear.
Sometimes, the greatest prison is not the threat spoken against us, but the fear we allow to occupy our hearts. What intimidation seeks to control, truth and courage can help set free.
REFLECTIVE LESSONS
FEAR CAN SILENCE YOUR COURAGE. Do not allow intimidation to rob you of your ability to make wise decisions.
DO NOT SURRENDER YOUR FUTURE TO THREATS. Another person’s frightening words do not determine your destiny.
SILENCE IS NOT ALWAYS AGREEMENT. You can walk away from intimidation without engaging in unnecessary confrontation.
CHRIST BRINGS HOPE AND FREEDOM. Through faith in Christ, we can confront fear and find renewed confidence in God’s promises.
PRAYER MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY WISDOM. Trust God, seek godly counsel, and take practical steps toward a healthier future.
YOUR PAST DOES NOT HAVE TO CONTROL YOUR FUTURE. An encounter that once frightened you need not become the foundation of your expectations for the rest of your life.
CLOSING THOUGHT
Never allow fear to silence your convictions or temporary peace to become permanent agreement with what destroys your peace.
Bilikisu’s story reminds us that an encounter with Christ can renew hope, strengthen faith, and restore courage.
A threat may frighten you, but it does not have to define you. Stand firm in Christ, walk in wisdom, and refuse to let fear write the story of your destiny.
