“A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.”
Proverbs 22:1 (KJV)»
THE BEAUTY THAT TIME CANNOT ERASE
Humanity has always been fascinated by appearance. People adorn themselves with fine clothing and seek ways to enhance their outward beauty. While there is nothing wrong with looking presentable, there is a beauty greater than physical attractiveness, the beauty of character.
Physical beauty may attract attention, but character earns trust.
Appearance may open a door, but character determines whether one remains in the room.
Beauty may impress people for a moment, but character influences them for a lifetime.
The face is seen by the eyes, but character is seen by the soul.
External beauty grows older with time, but good character grows more valuable.
Therefore, good character should be our best makeup skill.
THE FOUNDATION OF TRUE GREATNESS
An African proverb says:
“The beauty of a flower attracts the eye, but the sweetness of its fragrance keeps people near.”
Character is the fragrance of the soul.
Many people spend years building an image while neglecting character.
Yet image is what people think you are.
Character is what you truly are.
Knowledge may make a person intelligent.
Talent may make a person famous.
Wealth may make a person influential.
But character determines whether those gifts become a blessing or a curse.
The strongest pillar of lasting success is not talent, beauty, or wealth.
It is integrity.
THE ANCIENT AFRICAN STORY OF THE BRIDE
Among many ancient African communities, marriage was never based solely upon physical beauty.
The elders understood something modern society often forgets.
Beauty may attract a husband, but character keeps a home.
There is an old tale told around village fires.
A young chief’s son desired a wife.
Many beautiful maidens came before him adorned with beads, ornaments, and colorful garments.
Each sought to impress him with outward appearance.
But the chief’s mother watched carefully.
Rather than examining their beauty, she observed their conduct.
She watched how they greeted the elderly.
She watched how they treated children.
She watched how they spoke when offended.
She watched how they handled responsibility.
Eventually, one young woman arrived whose appearance was modest compared to the others.
Yet her character shone brightly.
She respected the elders.
She served willingly.
She spoke with wisdom.
She carried herself with humility.
The chief’s mother smiled and said:
“The beads may break. The garments may fade. But character will keep a marriage standing when beauty has grown old.”
The young woman became the bride.
Years later, while others who depended only on beauty struggled to maintain their homes, her household flourished because it had been built upon character.
The elders would often say:
“A beautiful face may win a wedding, but a beautiful character sustains a family.”
THE BEAUTY THAT HEAVEN CELEBRATES
God has always been more interested in character than appearance.
“For the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.”
1 Samuel 16:7 (KJV)»
The world may celebrate popularity.
God celebrates purity.
The world may reward appearance.
God rewards faithfulness.
The world may admire status.
God admires character.
Humility is beautiful.
Kindness is beautiful.
Integrity is beautiful.
Love is beautiful.
The most attractive person in God’s sight is the one whose heart reflects His nature.
MORAL LESSONS
- CHARACTER IS MORE VALUABLE THAN APPEARANCE
Physical beauty may attract attention, but good character earns lasting respect and trust.
- CHARACTER IS BUILT BY DAILY CHOICES
Small decisions repeated over time shape a person’s destiny.
- GOD LOOKS BEYOND THE FACE TO THE HEART
People may judge by appearance, but God examines character. Therefore, cultivate the beauty that Heaven values most.
“Let your adorning… be the hidden man of the heart.”
1 Peter 3:3-4 (KJV)»
May we seek the beauty that time cannot destroy, the beauty that strengthens relationships, blesses communities, and pleases God, the beauty of good character. Amen.
