Words are among the greatest gifts entrusted to humanity. They have built kingdoms, restored broken relationships, and changed the course of history. Yet words have one limitation, they cannot force understanding. Even the clearest truth loses its impact when a listener has already chosen misunderstanding.
Many people search for better arguments when what they truly need is a receptive heart. Pride, fear, bitterness, and prejudice often become invisible filters through which people interpret every conversation. A person who is determined not to understand will resist even the simplest explanation.
Understanding begins with humility. Truth can be spoken with clarity, but it can only be received by a willing heart.
“Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.”
Matthew 7:6 (KJV)
Jesus was not teaching contempt for people but discernment in ministry and relationships. Sacred truth should be shared generously, yet wisdom must recognize when a heart has deliberately rejected instruction. There comes a moment when repeated explanations cease to produce understanding because the listener is committed to resistance rather than revelation. Discernment knows when to continue speaking and when to entrust the matter to God.
THE STORY OF A WISE ELDER
An old African village was known for a wise elder whose counsel settled disputes that had divided families for generations. One day, two young men came before him over a disagreement about farmland.
After listening carefully, the elder noticed that one young man genuinely sought wisdom, while the other had already decided to reject whatever judgment was given unless it favoured him.
Instead of answering immediately, the elder handed each of them a calabash filled with water and asked them to walk across the village without spilling it.
The first returned with nearly every drop intact. The second laughed at the instruction and came back with an empty calabash.
The elder said, “The first man carried water. The second carried only a container. In the same way, one came carrying a teachable spirit, while the other carried only an argument.”
The villagers understood that the real issue was never the land but the condition of the heart.
Years later, the teachable young man became a respected leader because he welcomed correction. The other remained trapped in endless conflicts because he had become deaf to wisdom.
Even Jesus Christ, whose words carried eternal life, was misunderstood by many. Some listened to receive truth, while others listened only to accuse Him. The problem was never His message but the condition of their hearts.
Sometimes the wisest response is not another explanation but peaceful silence. Truth remains truth even when it is rejected.
THREE REFLECTIONS
- Before speaking, ask not only, “Are my words true?” but also, “Is this heart willing to receive them?” Wisdom chooses both the message and the moment.
- A teachable spirit is one of God’s greatest blessings. Humility hears opportunities for growth where pride hears personal attacks.
- Never lose confidence in truth because someone rejected it. The sun does not cease to shine because the blind cannot see it. Continue to speak with grace, discernment, and love, trusting God to prepare hearts that are ready to understand.
