“And upon a set day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat upon his throne, and made an oration unto them.
And the people gave a shout, saying, It is the voice of a god, and not of a man.
And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost.”
Acts 12:21-23 KJV
Herod did not fall in weakness but in applause. He was not destroyed in battle but in admiration. This teaches that many dangers do not come through failure, but through success without humility.
THE STORY OF THE TALL PALM TREE
In an ancient village stood a tall palm tree that rose above every other tree. It laughed at the shrubs below and boasted of touching the sky.
One season, a mighty wind came. The small grasses bent and survived. The humble trees swayed and remained rooted. But the proud palm refused to bend.
By morning, it lay broken on the ground.
The elders said, “Height without humility invites the storm.”
THE NATURE OF PRIDE
Pride rarely comes as arrogance at first. It appears as self-importance, entitlement, and refusal to learn. It tells a person that success is self-made and correction is unnecessary.
Once the heart feeds on applause, silence feels like rejection. A person begins to chase praise instead of purpose. Gratitude fades, listening declines, and others become rivals rather than companions.
Pride is not strength. It is insecurity dressed in honor.
THE WISDOM OF HUMILITY
Humility is clear sight. It knows gifts are blessings, not personal gods. It receives honor lightly and remembers the many hands that helped along the journey.
The tree with much fruit bends low. So do truly great people. They remain teachable, gentle, and grateful.
Success is not dangerous by itself. Success without humility is.
THE PATH OF TRUE GREATNESS
True greatness is seen in how one treats the weak, receives correction, and responds when others rise.
When honor comes, wear it lightly. When praise comes, filter it carefully. Many survive hardship only to drown in vanity.
Herod’s life warns us that one can sit on a throne and still be collapsing.
QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION
- If success changes how you treat others, have you truly risen?
- Do you own your success alone, or was it helped by grace and others?
- If applause ended today, would you still know who you are?
